It’s ‘as you were’ for the Under 18s…

The Under-18s can look forward to further trips to Herefordshire

Presteigne St Andrews Under-18s will again be competing in the HFA Floodlit Youth League during the coming 2011-12 season.

The club has to get special dispensation from the Football Association of Wales for the side to be allowed to play in the English set up.

Chairman Alan Randell felt that the sensible conclusion had been reached as there would otherwise have been a very real threat to the future of football at this level at Llanandras Park.

“We have played in the HFA set up for several years as it fits in well with the commitments of the club and those players involved,” he said.

“They are trying to get a Central Wales Under-18s league up and running but the plan as we understood it was to play these games on Sundays.

“That would never have worked for us as a lot of our lads play in the Mid Wales League (South) and many of these clubs play in a range of Sunday cups, including our own Alfred Sparey Cup,” he added.

The potential for long-distance away trips was also a factor in the club asking to be allowed to continue in the Herefordshire set up.

“Yes, they are planning on introducing a Central Wales structure and, while we applaud any project that encourages the development of the game, they are going to have to take a look at the logistics of it,” said Alan.

“After all, it could easily include trips to Aberystwyth and Penrhycoch which would involve long away trips on a Sunday – only 24 hours after many of these lads would have played league games on a Saturday.

“We just didn’t think it would have worked and so are very glad that common sense has prevailed and we are going to be allowed to remain in the Herefordshire structure,” he added.

It is likely that the Under-18s’ home games will be switched from Mondays to Wednesdays for the 2011-12 season for a number of reasons, uppermost among which is the fact that manager Roy Simcock works on Monday evenings so would be unavailable.

The fixtures will be published as soon as they become available, but it is unlikely the Under-18s’ season will start until September.
