First team crash at Abermule, but Reserves win at home

Presteigne put Abermule under first-half pressure

Presteigne St Andrews slipped to a bitterly disappointing defeat in their Spar Mid Wales League, second division clash at Abermule.

After a highly encouraging opening half-hour in which they created the best chances and had the bulk of possession, Presteigne found themselves a goal down at half-time when an Abermule striker sprang the offside trap and finished well past Scott Coxhall.

A goal down at half-time, a deflated Presteigne failed to hit the same heights for much of the second period – an unfortunate error from the otherwise impressive Scott Coxhall gifted Abermule their second goal while the third looked suspiciously offside, but was allowed to stand.

Things might have been different had Alan Stocker put away Presteigne’s best chance early in the second half when he was put through one-on-one with the home-team goalkeeper.

This was a bitterly disappointing result as, while they were ultimately good value for their win, Abermule were, in truth, no better than Presteigne.

It was far better news for the Reserves who were 1-0 home winners over Talgarth Town Reserves at Llanandras Park.

Tom Durant netted the only goal of the game after around 10 minutes of the second half as Stuart Skidmore’s side made it four points from six in the last eight days.

There will be more detailed reports up on the website – hopefully on Monday, 27 February, but failing that as soon as the information lands in my inbox from the respective managers.
