Tom’s brace ensures welcome win for first team

Tom Watkins scored twice in the first-team win at Kerry

Presteigne St Andrews FC confounded the critics with a fine 3-1 away win at Kerry in their Spar Mid Wales League, second division match on Saturday, 3 March.

Trevor Gummer’s side effectively got the job done in the first half when Tom Watkins scored twice and Kyle Chillery added a third to put the side into a commanding position as they led 3-0 at the interval.

Kerry hit back with a goal shortly after the break, but any thoughts that this would lead to the kind of capitulation that has so often blighted the season were banished as the side rallied to close out the win.

This win was all the more welcome as Bont – who are below Presteigne in the table with games in hand – came away from Llanfyllin Town with a surprise 4-2 victory.

Meanwhile, thanks to Tom ‘Pie’ Edwards for supplying me with the news the Reserves battled out a 1-1 draw at home to Bronllys in their Mid Wales League (South) fixture at Llanandras Park.

The visitors took an early lead which they held until about eight minutes from time when Alan Stocker popped up with an equaliser.

There was still time for a Bronllys player to give the referee the benefit of his experience, but sadly it appears he lapsed into the Anglo-Saxon vernacular to do it, and so received nothing more than a red card for his troubles.
