Title is Rhayader’s to lose, but Newbridge still in the hunt

Presteigne St Andrews FCRhayader Town will feel the Spar Mid Wales League title is theirs to lose after they won the top-of-the-table match against title rivals Montgomery Town at The Weirglodd.

Dylan McPhee’s side won the game 1-0 despite losing Rhys Thomas to a red card and they are now six points behind Monty with three games remaining.

Rhayader face an interesting run in to their season, with away trips to Carno and Dolgellau and then a home match against Llanidloes Town.

Yesterday’s match brought down the curtain on Montgomery’s season but Newbridge are still in with a mathematical chance of winning the title, but there is no margin for error for the Villagers.

Newbridge are 14 points behind Montgomery with five games remaining with the first of these on Wednesday, 18 April when they will take on Builth Wells.

Fifth-placed Carno could have a big say in the destination of the title as they will host both Rhayader and Newbridge between now and the end of the season.

Newbridge stayed in touch yesterday with a 2-1 win at Waterloo Rovers, while Llanidloes Town beat visiting Tywyn Bryncrug 5-4 to keep a hold on third place in the table.

Builth Wells were the big winners of the day – they stuck eight goals past second-bottom Dyffryn Banw while the home side managed two in reply, while Berriew and Carno drew 1-1 in a Montgomeryshire derby.

In the day’s other game, Llansantffraid Village came away from Dolgellau with a 3-2 victory.

In Division Two, Aberaeron still lead the way after a 2-1 home victory over Llanfyllin Town and so still lead Llandrindod Wells by two points with two games in hand – Llan’dod beat visiting Aberdyfi 3-2 at The Broadway.

Llanfair United and Four Crosses remain in touch – Llanfair were 7-0 winners at Presteigne St Andrews while Four Crosses came away from Knighton Town with a 4-1 victory.

Tregaron Turfs were the big winners of the day  – they hammered bottom side Meifod 10-1 to leave Meifod on minus-one point for the season after they failed to fulfil a fixture on Friday, 6 April – the second such instance this season.

Abermule went to Machynlleth and came away with a 3-0 victory, while Rhosgoch Rangers were also 3-0 victors over Bont at Crow Lane.

In the Mid Wales League (South), Newcastle have already clinched the title, but they show little sign of easing up as they hammered Knighton’s second string 7-1 but Newcastle can’t be promoted, so the race is on for second place.

Hay St Marys are in pole position after a 5-2 win at Bronllys, while the day’s other match saw Llandrindod Wells Reserves run out 4-3 winners at Talgarth Town Reserves.

Meanwhile, Builth Wells Reserves are through to the final of the Pip Samuel (Electrical) Mid Wales League (South) Cup Final after they were 3-2 winners over Penybont after extra time at the Racecourse.
