Presteigne St Andrews FC rounded off their Spar Mid Wales League second division programme with a predictable 2-1 defeat at Aberaeron, but they pushed the would-be champions all the way in this one.
Manager Trevor Gummer could muster only the bare 11 players who fancied the long trip to the welsh coast and one of those was Tom Edwards who was only originally due to travel as a spectator.
To his credit, Tom agreed to turn out, but lasted only 20 minutes before he limped out of the action due to injury.
Trailing 2-0 at the break, it would have been easy for the squad to fold in the second half and ship a barrow-load of goals but they didn’t and Merv Stephens popped up with a consolation goal that no doubt sent just a few nerves through the Aberaeron camp, although they held on for the victory.
There was a lively first half at Llanandras Park in which the Reserves found themselves 4-3 down at the interval against visiting Builth Wells Reserves.
Duane Anning netted twice for Stuart Skidmore’s side with Chris Patten also on target as ‘Skiddy’s’ side did its best to stay in touch with one of the Mid Wales League (South)’s better sides.
Neither side could quite live up to that sort of goalscoring rate after the interval and there was to be no further addition to the score as Builth held on for the three points.
