Round up of the weekend action

Presteigne St Andrews FCRhayader Town were the big winners in the first division of the Spar Mid Wales League when they came away from Carno with a 3-0 victory in what had looked to be a tricky fixture.

Leaders Montgomery Town have completed their fixtures so could only sit and watch from afar as Rhayader faced a trip to fifth-placed Carno whom they must have been hoping could have done them a favour.

But it wasn’t to be and Rhayader’s win takes them to within three points of Monty with two games to play.

Newbridge’s title hopes ended when they were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Llansantffraid Village – Newbridge are 10 points behind Montgomery but now have only three games to play.

Elsewhere yesterday, Builth Wells were surprisingly held to a 0-0 draw by visiting Aberystwyth University at Lant Field, while Waterloo Rovers were 2-1 winners at Dolgellau.

In the day’s other game, Tywyn Bryncrug and Llanidloes Town battled out a 2-2 draw in their meeting in north Wales.

In division two it has been a  thoroughly productive weekend for league leaders Aberaeron who took a giant stride towards winning the title with two wins in as many days.

First of all they saw off Presteigne St Andrews at home, although the 2-1 margin was far tighter than most predicted, not least because Presteigne had only the bare 11 players and lost one of those after 20 minutes due to injury.

But Aberaeron pressed home this advantage on Sunday, 22 April when they beat Rhosgoch Rangers 3-1 at Crow Lane and so they now lead the table by four points while they also have two games in hand over second-placed Llandrindod Wells.

24 hours earlier, Rhosgoch had been the big winners of the weekend when they came away from Abermule with a 6-0 victory, while third-placed Llanfair United kept alive their outside title hopes with a 5-1 home win over Aberdyfi.

Llanfair are five points behind the leaders and have played a game more, so they effectively need snookers if they are to take the title.

It was all going the way of Aberaeron as Llandrindod Wells dropped points at home when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Four Crosses – not that ‘Crosses’ are too shabby, as they are in fourth place in the table, so the result was not a great surprise, although realistically Spa needed to win that one.

Talgarth Town and Machynlleth battled out a 0-o draw in Breconshire, while the Bont versus Knighton Town match was abandoned.

A look at the league table will tell you it has been a very tough season for Meifod, not least because they have had six points deducted for not fulfilling fixtures.

But at least they had something to smile about last night – their 4-3 home win over Tregaron Turfs was only their second victory of the season, while it also ensured they are back in the ‘plus points’ in the league table.

While I don’t yet have all the results from yesterday’s Mid Wales League (South) fixtures, Hay St Marys took a major stride towards securing runners-up spot when they beat champions-elect Newcastle 3-1 at Forest Road.

Presteigne Reserves and Builth Wells Reserves battled out an entertaining game at Llanandras Park in which all seven goals came in the first half – Builth won it 4-3.

I will put up the other results at this level if and when they become available.
