The weekend is almost here and so that can only mean one thing – football and a couple of games for Presteigne St Andrews FC on Saturday, 31 August.

The first team will face what will surely be one of their longest league trips of the season as they are off to Machynlleth for a Spar Mid Wales League, second division match.

The opening league game saw an interesting battle with Knighton Town that ended in a 0-0 draw but it proved a very good contest and a game that would surely have benefited both clubs.

There is very little to go on in terms of a form guide for Machynlleth as this will be their first league outing of the new season.

But their one result of note came in the preliminary round of the Welsh Cup in which they progressed by beating visiting Hay St Marys 6-3.

This was all the more impressive as they were 3-1 down at half-time in that one, so this represented a very impressive second-half comeback.

As for the Reserves, they will welcome Newcastle to Llanandras Park for a Mid Wales League (South) game.

Mark Weiland’s side have started well this season – a 5-0 home win over Llandrindod Wells Reserves was not a bad way to open the campaign, while they produced a ‘Machynlleth-like’ second-half comeback at Rhayader Town Reserves last time out to take a point from a 3-3 draw.

The Ressies were 3-0 down at one stage in that game and seemingly out of it, but they hit back to take a point and so this suggests there is no shortage of spirit in the squad.

Newcastle had to battle various tiers of bureaucracy just to play in the ‘South’ at all this season and it is good to see they won through to take up their place in the league this season – well done to the Newcastle officials for digging in their heels and taking their case to all the way to Wembley.

The Reserves’ game is due to kick off at 2.30pm and the admission prices will be £2.00 for adults and £1.00 for senior citizens and youngsters under the age of 16.
