Presteigne Reserves won the Radnor Valley Cup after a nine-goal thriller against Bronllys at School Lane on Sunday, 11 May.

They will be hoping to build on this on Saturday, 17 May when they will take on Builth Wells Reserves in the Builth Spa Cup final at Lant Field.

Tom Ammonds outlines just how the game at Radnor went as far as he and his team-mates were concerned.

“It wasn’t a great day for a cup final because of the windy, cold conditions but the pitch was in fantastic condition,” said Tom.

“We started sloppily and went 1-0 down within a quarter of an hour, but we equalised 10 or so minutes later after a rampaging run from Bobby Bird ended with him being felled in the area and Mark Weiland scored from resulting spot kick.

“At 1-1 we started to play better and we then took a 2-1 lead through Spencer Napolitano whose cross shot deceived the goalkeeper and nestled in corner of net.

“Rambo [Anthony Vernalls] then makes a couple of decent saves as did Tom Bevan for Bronllys before we were hit by two sucker punches to go into the interval 3-2 down.

“In the second half we had the wind behind us which was much easier and we started to pass the ball well creating numerous opportunities with Duane Anning and OJ [Oliver Jones] going close.

“We then equalised from a Weedo corner which I apparently – according to Duane – flicked on at the near post for a scrambled leveller.

“Ioan Hughes then came on for us and delivered the perfect cross for Duane to score at the back post to make it 4-3.

“The wind then cam to our assistance as Ranbo launched the ball forward for the always-running Duane to run on to – he outpaced the defence and finished superbly with ball dropping from over his shoulder – 5-3 to us.

“Bronllys wouldn’t lie down and they were to score the final goal and the goal of the game when their centre forward picked up the ball midway in our half and hammered it – Ronnie Radford-esque – into the top corner with five minutes to go.

“There were a few hairy moments after this, but we managed to see the game out for a 5-4 win.

“Many thanks to Radnor Valley for being great hosts and all the supporters who braved the conditions.”
