First team pick up an important victory

Presteigne St Andrews FC
Christian Roberts (number 9) netted the Presteigne winner

Presteigne St Andrews FC overcame both the windy conditions and Tregaron Turfs to register their first Spar Mid Wales League, second division since 22 October.

Goals from Tom Watkins and Christian Roberts earned Presteigne a very welcome 2-1 victory, not least because it took Trevor Gummer’s side above Tregaron the league table.

It also went some way towards redressing the balance after Tregaron had won 7-3 in the first meeting between the sides back in September.

Tom Watkins netted his second goal in two games since his return to the club to put Presteigne a goal up after only three minutes of a first half that was largely spoiled by the gusty wind.

Tregaron got themselves back on level terms on the half-hour mark, so the teams went in all square at the interval.

It looked as though Presteigne were going to have to make do with a share of the spoils until around five minutes from time when Christian Roberts netted the goal that was to win the game.

He collected the ball near the touchline and then went on a run that saw him beat three or four players before firing home from the edge of the area to secure the three points.

The Reserves were due to be in action at Bromyard Casuals in a friendly game but I am yet to hear any news on that one – as soon as I do it will be added on to this page.

But well done to Trevor and the team – it might have been a long time coming, but the win was very welcome and will have us all breathing a little more easily…
