Presteigne St Andrews FC enjoyed victory for the first time since 22 October and central defender Tom Ammonds felt they were good value for the 2-1 home victory over Tregaron Turfs.

Goals from Tom Watkins and Christian Roberts secured Trevor Gummer’s side a valuable three points and took them above Tregaron in the league table.

“It was an exciting game and I think we deserved it although it has been too long coming,” said Tom.

“But we knew it would (come) as we have been pushing teams recently and losing by the odd goal.

“It was a far better all round team performance on Saturday,” he added.

Tom Watkins gave Presteigne the perfect start when he put the home side ahead after only three minutes, but Tregaron were back on level terms shortly before the break.

‘Ammo’ felt this was one of those instances in which you had to give credit where it was due – it was some goal.

“It was one-all at half-time and to be fair it was one of the best goals I think you’ll see all season,” he said.

“They were playing with the wind in the first half and, whether he meant it as well as he did, he just whipped it in with his left foot.

“Darryl was left just rooted, really, and it hit the underside of the crossbar and went in – I won’t see a better goal than that this season.

“I almost clapped it myself although I don’t think I should have done!”

Tom admitted it looked as though it was going to be another of those afternoons when the side would pay the price for squandering opportunities.

“I think it is a case that everyone lacks the confidence – the strikers have been lacking confidence and the defence has been lacking confidence,” he said.

“But it has been coming – Christian had a fair few chances; Andy White had a few while Joel had a couple of shots.

“I suppose it is one of those where you persevere and something will give along the line and there were about five minutes to go and Christian scored a really good goal.”
