Presteigne St Andrews FC had a day to forget as they slumped to a 3-1 home defeat against second-bottom Bont in their Spar Mid Wales League, second division match.
Any hopes that last weekend’s encouraging victory at Abermule might spark something of an end-of-season revival for Trevor Gummer’s side were snuffed out as Bont netted three second-half goals before debutant Gwyn Jones pulled one back for the home side.
Early reports suggest the problems were much the same as they have been for a while – individual errors cost the side dear, while the overall lack of fitness was also telling in the closing stages of the game.
For Bont, this was only their third league win of the season, but this victory ensured they completed a league double over Presteigne.
It is hoped to have a match report up online early next week, but there is no doubt that will tighten things up a little bit at the bottom of the league table.
While Meifod look to be dead and buried at the bottom, Bont are clearly showing signs of recovery – this was their second-straight win and, while they are still eight points behind Presteigne, they have no fewer than six games in hand.
There are now three sides – including Presteigne – locked together on 19 points as Tregaron Turfs picked up a useful point from a 0-0 draw at Llanfair United. Abermule lost 2-0 at home to Llandrindod Wells.
Presteigne are only above third-bottom Tregaron as we have scored two more goals than the Turfs – the goal difference is identical. I am assuming this is the reason we are still above them, rather than alphabetical order…
There is clearly still work to be done if Presteigne are not to finish in the bottom two places this season.
A reminder the Reserves will head to New Radnor tomorrow (Sunday, 11 March) when they will take on Radnor Valley for their Radnor Valley Cup semi-final tie.
Manager Stuart Skidmore advises me he plans to run the rule over a couple of new signings in this one as he is not allowed to field any player who has turned out for the first team this season.
Despite this rule, Stuart is still confident he can field a competitive side for the game which is due to kick off at 3.00pm – my thanks to Radnor Valley’s Steve Pigott for confirming the kick off time.
