Round up of the weekend action

Presteigne St Andrews FCIt is ‘as you were’ at the top of the Spar Mid Wales League first division after wins for the top two clubs in their weekend games.

Montgomery Town remain eight points clear at the top after they won 2-1 in a Montgomeryshire derby match at Carno, while Rhayader Town stayed in touch with a 4-1 victory at Dyffryn Banw.

Rhayader have two games in hand over Monty and, while it is always said that at this stage of the season it is far better have the points on the board than the games in hand, Montgomery will know they can’t afford to take their eye off the ball in terms of the race for the title and the Cymru Alliance place that goes with it.

Banw’s defeat means they remain in the relegation battle as three sides cover the bottom three clubs – Banw are better off than both Aberystwyth University and Welshpool Town, neither of whom had a game.

Elsewhere in the first division, there were good home wins for Bow Street – 5-2 against Waterloo Rovers – and Builth Wells, who were 4-3 victors over Tywyn Bryncrug.

Llansantffraid Village were 1-0 winners at Berriew and the two clubs are now among four locked together on 30 points in mid-table.  The day’s other scheduled match between Dolgellau and Newbridge was called off.

In the second division, Aberaeron will be seen by many as title favourites after their 5-1 win at Presteigne St Andrews – they moved into third place, two points behind leaders Knighton Town and with no fewer than five games in hand.

Knighton went back to the top after they beat Talgarth Town 3-2 at Bryn-y-Castell, while previous leaders Llandrindod Wells were beaten 1-0 at Llanfair United.

Machynlleth are up to sixth after they saw off visiting Kerry 3-2 while the Bont boss has to be in line for March’s manager of the  month award after they beat Aberdyfi 4-2 at home – their third straight league win, but, amazingly, only their fourth of the season.

Bont move to within five points of Presteigne St Andrews at the bottom, but they have six games in hand.

Tregaron Turfs climbed a place without even kicking a ball – Presteigne’s heavy home defeat means their goal difference is now worse than that of the Turfs, and so the Ceredigion side moved up a place.

The Meifod-Tregaron game was called 0ff – not sure of the reason behind this, but one thing is for certain, not only are Meifod struggling with only one point at the foot of the table, but they could well face a very busy end to their season as they play catch up due to the postponements.

In the Mid Wales League (South), Newcastle are now six points clear at the top after they were 4-0 winners at Newbridge Reserves, while second-placed Hay St Marys stayed in touch with a 6-0 win at bottom side Talgarth Town Reserves.

Builth Wells Reserves and Rhayader Town Reserves are third and fourth respectively after both won – Builth’s second string were 2-1 victors at Radnor Valley, while Rhayader Reserves beat Brecon Town 5-1 at The Weirglodd.

Presteigne Reserves were the day’s top scorers as Stuart Skidmore’s side leapfrogged St Harmon in the league table after a 7-1 win in the hills above Rhayader, while the day’s other game saw Bronllys run out 4-2 winners at Bucknell.
