Round Up of the Weekend Action

Presteigne St Andrews FCIt’s very much a case of ‘as you were’ at the top of the Spar Mid Wales League first division with Montgomery Town holding a nine-point advantage over Rhayader Town who have three games in hand.

Both sides won 2-0 on Saturday, 7 April – Monty saw off visiting Llansantffraid Village, while Rhayader were victors at Waterloo Rovers.

Llanidloes Town are the only other possible contenders for the title, but they lost ground when they were held to a 1-1 draw by visiting Carno who remain in fourth place.

Newbridge are fifth – level on points with Carno –  after they picked up a 2-1 win from their long trip to Tywyn Bryncrug. While they have six games in hand over Montgomery Town, Newbridge are 17 points back, so they are going to have to go on some run if they are to seriously challenge the top two.

Elsewhere in Division One there were away wins for Berriew – 2-1 at Dyffryn Banw – and Builth Wells, who ran out 3-1 victors at Bow Street.

At the bottom of the table, Welshpool were relegated some time ago and have finished their fixtures – it is assumed only one side will be relegated due to Penparcau’s demise on the eve of the season, but for the record, Dyffryn Banw’s defeat leaves them three points shy of third-bottom Aberystwyth University with the students having two games in hand.

In Division Two, Llandrindod Wells have had a decent week – they followed up Wednesday’s 6-2 win at Llanandras Park with a 5-1 win at Talgarth Town and remain one point clear of Aberaeron whom it appears had a bit of a struggle to get past bottom side Meifod 3-2 at home.

Aberaeron remain clear favourites, though – they have three games in hand over Llan’dod – while Llanfair United remain in with a shot of promotion after they were 1-0 winners at Knighton Town at Bryn-y-Castell.  That win takes Llanfair above Knighton who drop to fifth.

I know some will suspect I am ‘having a dig’ at Knighton when I write this – but I am genuinely not.  I suspect even Knighton boss Martin Hall would agree that if Knighton are to have a chance of going up, they will surely now have to win their remaining four games as all four clubs above them have games in hand.

Four Crosses are fourth – they were 3-2 Good Friday winners at Abermule while, at the bottom, Tregaron Turfs inched a point clear of Presteigne St Andrews when they battled out a 1-1 home draw with fellow strugglers Aberdyfi.
