Maundy Thursday Quiz 2012

Dot Griffiths tells it as it is at the Maundy Thursday Quiz

Well, it was some way to start the Easter weekend break as 17 teams headed down to the Football Club to face everything question master Dot Griffiths could throw at them.

There was a wide range of topics covered, although in the webmaster’s team there was more than a hint of concern during round one which seemed to be based loosely around celebrity.

My distinct lack of knowledge of all things soap, ‘Z-list’ celebrity and X Factor finalists threatened to make it a long night, but fortunately Dot had provided a good mix of questions and there was something for everyone by the end of the night.

It looked for so long as if there was going to be a serious upset on the books – the usual suspects, Norton United were left chasing the game, as we headed into the final round or so.

The Exiles were a point clear going into that final round, but they were to pull up short as their lack of knowledge of ‘all things Presteigne’ and Norton United got home by the narrowest of margins.

My apologies, I can’t remember the name of the team that finished third, but I do recall it included first-team regular Alan Stocker and his brother – ‘Stocks’ was certainly doing his bit to dispel the theory that all footballers are lacking in the grey matter department.

Our thanks to Dot for her hard work in setting the questions for the quiz – anyone who has ever done this will know that it takes absolutely ages to come up with the questions, then go through them and check the answers are all correct.

Thanks also go to Rose Weiland and Deb Field for overseeing the scoring and making sure everything tallied as it should, and also to Dot’s ‘glamorous assistants’ – Clive Griffiths and Clive Field – who collected in the answer papers.  Also, many thanks to Len for the use of his PA and everyone else who helped on the night.

It was really good to see people down at Llanandras Park who would not normally have a reason to be there and hopefully the event will be repeated next year – by my reckoning, well, by Google’s reckoning, it will be on Thursday, 28 March.

So, stick the date in your diary now – it was a great night out and the perfect way to start the Easter period with a chance to exercise the brain while enjoying a drink or two at the same time – what could be better?
